Balancing Entrepreneurship, Studies, Family Life, and Household: How I Manage It ALL

Managing a business, studying for an Executive MBA, raising a child, and taking care of a household can feel like a never-ending juggling act. Trust me, I know! As someone who wears all these hats, I’ve had to learn how to strike a balance between these different aspects of life. Over time, I’ve found a few strategies that have helped me stay on top of things without losing my mind (most days!). Here’s how I do it—and how you can too.

Being present quotes

1. Setting Priorities: What Needs My Focus Right Now?

Let me tell you, not every day looks the same. Some days I’m all in with HM Accounting—especially during tax season, when client work demands all my attention. On other days, I need to focus on my studies for my Executive MBA. And then, of course, there are times when my family needs me more. Balancing all of this means I have to be crystal clear on my priorities.

For me, it’s not about giving equal attention to everything all the time—that’s just not realistic. Instead, I focus on what needs me the most at any given time. When my business requires full focus, I communicate this to my family so they understand why I’m spending more time in the office. The same goes when my son needs more of me. I try to be fully present wherever my attention is needed the most, knowing that it will shift again soon.

2. Time Management: My Secret Weapon

Time management is the one thing that keeps me sane. I’ve become a huge fan of time-blocking, which simply means I allocate specific hours for different activities. So, my mornings might be dedicated to running HM Accounting, while my afternoons are for studying, and evenings are for family time.

Of course, life doesn’t always go according to plan. My son might need extra attention, or a client’s urgent request could pop up unexpectedly. When that happens, I give myself the flexibility to adjust, but having a structured day helps me stay on track and get the most out of each hour. My schedule is like my safety net, and it’s a game-changer!

3. Delegating: You Don’t Have to Do It All

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you can’t do everything yourself—nor should you try. In my business, I have a wonderful full-time staff member and reliable freelancers who handle tasks I don’t need to do personally. This frees me up to focus on growing the business and serving clients at a higher level.

At home, it’s the same story. My husband and I split household responsibilities, and even though my son is still very little, he helps out with small chores (he’s surprisingly good at tidying up his toys!). We’ve also outsourced things like cleaning, which saves us time and stress. If you can delegate, do it! It’s a total life-saver.

4. Connecting My Studies with My Business

One of the coolest things about studying while running a business is that I can apply what I’m learning directly to HM Accounting. Every time I study a new concept in finance or strategy, I find myself thinking, “How can I use this to improve my business?” It keeps me excited about learning because I can immediately see how it benefits my work.

When I was working on a financial planning assignment recently, I realized that the concepts I was studying could help refine how I guide my clients through their own financial strategies. It’s like I’m killing two birds with one stone—growing my business and learning at the same time!

Family

5. Making Family Time Count

Family is everything to me, and even though my schedule is packed, I always make sure to carve out time for them. It’s not always about spending hours together—it’s more about making the time we have meaningful. Whether it’s reading Ahmad his favorite bedtime story or having dinner as a family, I try to be fully present during those moments.

On the weekends, we make sure to have some family outings, which gives us a chance to reconnect and recharge. Those times together remind me why I’m doing all of this in the first place, and they keep me grounded when things get hectic.

6. Technology: My Best Friend

I’ll be the first to admit that technology is my best friend when it comes to staying organized. From project management tools for my business to apps that remind me when my next assignment is due, tech makes everything more manageable. I use apps like Google Calendar to schedule my day and Trello to track my work projects. At home, grocery delivery apps and automated bill payments take a huge load off.

These small tech hacks free up my time, so I’m not bogged down by every little task. The less I have to think about the small stuff, the more I can focus on what truly matters.

Friends

7. Building a Support System

Here’s the thing: None of this would be possible without a strong support system. I’m lucky to have family members who understand the demands of being a business owner, student, and mom. My husband is an incredible partner, and we share the workload as much as possible. And when things get overwhelming, I don’t hesitate to lean on friends and colleagues for advice or help.

In my business, I’m surrounded by a team that I trust completely. Knowing that I can rely on them to keep things running smoothly while I focus on other areas of my life gives me peace of mind.

Be Kind quotes

8. Being Kind to Myself

This might be the most important lesson I’ve learned: I can’t do everything perfectly, and that’s okay. There are days when I feel like I’m falling short in one area or another, but I’ve learned to cut myself some slack. Progress is more important than perfection.

When I manage to close a big client deal, ace an exam, or even just get through the day without dropping a ball, I celebrate those wins. And on the tough days? I remind myself that tomorrow is a new chance to try again.

Be Kind to yourself
